As a board certified gastroenterologist, Joseph Schowalter, DO, focuses on compassionate medical care while treating his patients as if they are his own family members. During every appointment he takes time to explain and educate his patients about their medical conditions and the procedures that need to be performed.
Dr. Schowalter diagnoses and manages all gastrointestinal disorders. His professional interests include Barrett’s esophagus, pancreaticobiliary disorders, advanced endoscopic procedures, hemorrhoid treatment, esophageal reflux, colon cancer screening, inflammatory bowel disease as well as many other general gastrointestinal disorders.
Dr. Schowalter completed his medical education at Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois-Chicago and afterwards became chief resident of the program. He completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Illinois and then completed an Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship at Rush University. He is board certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology and is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association and American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
In his free time, Dr. Schowalter is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hiking, visiting national parks, skiing, kayaking, outdoor photography and freshwater fishing.
